2016 Conference Awards
a. Lifetime Contribution Award
The International Association for Chinese Management Research takes pride in honoring a retired scholar who has made a significant contribution to the field of Chinese management research with the “IACMR Lifetime Contribution Award”. The recipient scholar should have made substantial contribution to Chinese management scholarship and have provided exemplary service to the IACMR. The process involves a nomination by an IACMR member with a nomination letter and a CV of the candidate and the candidates are assessed by the IACMR Lifetime Contribution Award Committee of prominent scholars. The Executive Committee of IACMR reviews and approves the recommendation by this Award Committee..
The recipient of the “2016 Lifetime Contribution Award” is Professor Anne S. Tsui. We are honored to give this award to Professor Anne Tsui who is an outstanding international leader in organizational studies, and a founder of the Chinese management research movement.
Over her 35 year career as a management scholar, Professor Anne Tsui has published over 100 articles and 12 books, and is one of the most cited authors in the field of management with over 20,000 citations according to Google scholar. Her articles have won some of the most prestigious research awards including the ASQ Distinguished Contribution Award, the Awards, the Center for AMJ and the JOM Best Paper Creative Leadership Applied Leadership Research Award, and the University of Minnesota (alumni) Outstanding Achievement Award. She has been a fellow of Academy of Management since 1997, a fellow of the Academy of International Business since 2016 and she received an Honorary Doctorate in Economics from the University of St. Gallen in 2015.
Besides her scholarly contributions, Anne has devoted herself to serve our community with all her heart and soul. In 1994 she returned to Hong Kong and to become the founding head of the Department of Management at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). She served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Academy of Management Journal (AMJ) from 1996 to1999, and later as an elected officer of the Academy leading to the Presidency of AOM from 2008 to 2013. During her sabbatical year at Peking University in 2000-2001, Anne saw the pressing need for high quality management knowledge and scholarship in fast-developing China. This inspired her to found the International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR) in 2002, and Management and Organization Review (MOR) in 2005. She has also done a lot in promoting the professional development of young scholars and doctoral students. For example, she co-founded the Chinese Management Scholar Research Method Workshop with Dr. Larry Farh in 1999, which aimed at equipping Chinese scholars with modern research methodology to conduct empirical research. She has served as a faculty advisor in this workshop over the years. In recognizing her immense contributions to the field, the Academy of Management awarded her its Distinguished Service Contribution Award in 2015.
Prof. Anne Tsui has now retired from the Arizona State University, after serving for over 35 years in the organization studies field.
In summary, Prof. Anne Tsui has made stellar contributions in research and service to the field of Chinese management. She is an exemplary scholar most deserving to receive the IACMR Lifetime Contribution Award.
b. Distinguished Scholarly Contribution Award
This award recognizes a senior scholar who has devoted much of his/her career to the study of Chinese management and has made significant contributions to the field in theory, methodology or in explaining the workings of Chinese organizations or organizations in China; who has advanced the field and blazed a path for future researchers; and who has enhanced the visibility of Chinese management research by impacting the broader research community.
Prof. Xiaoping Chen from the University of Washington has won the Distinguished Scholarly Contribution Award 2016. Here are her biography and the statement of accomplishment.
Xiao-Ping Chen (email@example.com) is currently Philip M. Condit Endowed Chair Professor in the Department of Management and Organization, Foster School of Business, University of Washington. She is a Fellow at Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. She is also Editor-in-Chief for Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes and Editor-in-Chief for Management Insights, a bilingual (Chinese and English) magazine for business educators and practitioners.
Professor Chen’s research interests include cooperation and competition in social dilemmas, teamwork and leadership, entrepreneur passion, Chinese guanxi, and cross-cultural communication and management. Professor Chen has published more than 30 research papers in top-tier journals such as Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Management Science, and Journal of International Business Studies. She was a faculty previously at Indiana University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She served as a Rep-at-Large in the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management for three years.
Professor Chen is highly involved in Chinese management research and business community. She served as the second President for International Association for Chinese Management Research (IACMR). She has organized numerous research methods workshops, professional development workshops, and panel discussions for IACMR. She has published eight Chinese books so far, among which the Empirical Methods in Organization and Management Research book has been the best seller in China since 2008.
Professor Chen is the recipient of numerous teaching and research awards, including Andrew Smith Faculty Development Award (2010), Outstanding University of Washington Woman Award (2010), Outstanding Ph.D. Mentor Award (2009, 2004), Dean’s International Research Award (2008, 2001), Charles E. Summer Teaching Award (2004), Best Conference Paper Award (2012, 2008) by IACMR, and Top 20 Poster Paper Award (2009) by Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychological Association.
c. MOR/PUP Best Paper Award of Chinese Theory of Management
To promote original theorizing to account for management phenomena that are relatively salient in China, Peking University Press (PUP) has set up the MOR/PUP Best Paper Award of Chinese Theory of Management. The award is intended to especially encourage research on “Indigenous Chinese theory of management”. It is important for Chinese management researchers to be innovative in their theoretical analysis. The award aims to recognize the best paper published in MOR that addresses new research questions, identifies new concepts, and/or develop new theories from the “Chinese theory of management” perspective. The winning paper will be selected from the articles published in MOR in the past two years.

The Kwok Lueng Fund was created to commemorate the life and work of Professor Kwok Leung, and to continue his mission of supporting young scholars. The fund is intended to support Ph.D. students who need funds to collect data to finish their dissertations. The fund is open to all doctoral students doing Chinese Management research.
