End-of-Year Message from the President

Dear IACMR fellow members,

Warmest greetings from Hong Kong!

As the 6th President of IACMR, and on behalf of the IACMR leadership and staff, I would like to extend warm holiday and season’s greetings to you and your loved ones!

It is my pleasure to provide you with some end-of-year updates:

Since our 12th anniversary celebration at the IACMR Sixth Biennial Conference in Beijing, IACMR leadership and staff have been taking concrete steps in growing and developing IACMR into a professional community of scholars. In these endeavors, we continue to instill our core values of “pursuit of excellence, source of inspiration, responsible scholarship and spirit of service”.

This year, we saw a smooth transition between outgoing and incoming officers. The transition took place during the officers’ retreat in Beijing after the IACMR Conference. Three important events have taken place in the past few months. First, under the leadership of Ray Friedman, the Program Committee for 2016 IACMR Conference was assembled and chose an inspiring theme of “Culture and Chinese Management.” The Call for Submissions has been announced by email and is also available on the Conference website.

Second, Arie Lewin, the Editor-in-Chief of MOR, just completed the Inaugural Research Frontiers Conference. Hosted by the Department of Management of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the invitation-only event was held on December 4-6, 2014. The theme of the event was “Globalization of Knowledge Creation and Innovation in the Context of Emerging Economies” and seven plenary sessions were held in addition to the opening and closing gatherings. Sixty senior and junior scholars attended from Mainland China, the US, Singapore, Taiwan, Korea, Canada, the UK, Australia and Israel, as well as Hong Kong. The conference was highly successful. According to Arie, numerous novel research ideas emerged from the conference, enough to fill two special issues at MOR!

Finally, the famed biennial IACMR Research Method Workshop has been organized and will be held at Tianjin University on July 12-16, 2015. The Call-for-Application is now open through our website. We encourage PhD students and junior faculty members to apply and learn about the craft of research from world-class faculty.

Under our new constitution and bylaws, IACMR is now run by the Executive Committee (EC), which includes six members, the president (Larry Farh), the immediate past president (Chao Chen), president-elect (Neng Liang), vice president/program chair (Ray Friedman), executive director (Zhijun Yao), and treasurer/secretary (Xiaomeng Zhang). Since last July, the EC has held monthly virtual meetings to execute IACMR routine business as well as address new challenges and opportunities facing IACMR. Some of the top issues for the EC in 2015 include: a) working with a professional website service provider; b) preparing for the 2016 Conference; c) finding a host for 2018 Conference; d) forging partnerships with key Chinese professional organizations and business schools to expand IACMR memberships; and e) increasing IACMR’s impact on Chinese management research and teaching. As these events unfold, they will be reported in details in our bi-monthly briefings. Allow me to conclude by saying how proud I feel of the accomplishments of IACMR and how grateful I am to each and every one of you who care for and contribute to the steady growth of IACMR. Congratulations to all on the great achievements of 2014. I look forward to 2015 as a year of prosperity for IACMR and all of its members, friends, and supporters.

2016 Biennial Conference — Call for Submissions

The IACMR’s 7th biennial meeting will take place in Hangzhou, China from June 15-19, 2016. It will be hosted by the School of Management, Zhejiang University. The Call for Submissions was released in October. Please click here for the detailed Call for Submissions. The deadline for submissions is midnight October 16, 2015 (U.S. Eastern Standard Time).

2015 IACMR Research Methods Workshop — Call for Applications

The 2015 IACMR Research Methods Workshop will be held from July 12 to 16, 2015 in Tianjin, China. It will be hosted by the College of Management and Economics, Tianjin University. The instructional language for the workshop is English and Chinese. The Call for Applications was released on Dec. 4 and is available here on online. The application deadline is Feb. 15th, 2015.

The purposes of the workshop are to introduce the major research methods involved in designing a high quality research project, to provide instructions on developing a research project that will make a meaningful contribution to knowledge and practice, and to build relationships with world-class management scholars. The 4-day program will consist of lectures and intensive discussion sessions for developing your research proposals. The workshop’s ultimate goal is to help develop research projects that will address important management problems and be publishable in international (English) academic journals. The previous workshops were very well received and the participants benefited a lot.

MOR Research Frontiers Conference

The Inaugural Management and Organization Review (MOR) Research Frontiers Conference was held in Hong Kong from December 4th to 6th at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The Management Department of HKUST sponsored and hosted the conference. HKUST Business School and The Institute for Emerging Market Studies co-sponsored the event. The conference is set to be an exploration platform for management and organization scholars around the world to investigate and create new knowledge in the field. To give a broader perspective, business executives, policy-makers, social science and other non-business scholars are brought together with a view to stimulating a boundary-crossing conversation. This conference also provides the basis for framing future issues of the MOR Journal – a well-established academic journal, which was born some ten years ago, with special reference to China and other emerging economies in the broad field of business and management studies.

The City University Department of Management sponsored and hosted the pre-conference Paper Development Workshop. The topic of the Conference is “Globalization of Knowledge Creation and Innovation in the Context of Emerging Economies.” Professor Arie Y. Lewin, MOR Editor in Chief, gave opening speech to the participants. Professor Tony F. Chan, HKUST President addressed welcome message.

Besides the Opening Panel on the first day and Retrospective Editor Panel the last day, there are 7 panels in the conference. The seven Plenary Panels, which make up the inaugural Research Frontiers Conference, were selected to facilitate explorations of a diverse set of themes that address many facets of the overall conference theme.
