Welcome Message from the MOR Chief Editor
Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to the Inaugural Management and Organization Review Research Frontiers Conference on the “Globalization of Knowledge Creation and Innovation in the Context of Emerging Economies.”
The overarching idea behind this conference is to create the exploration platform of MOR for discovering new research opportunities that could serve as the basis for future MOR Special Issues. We were very fortunate to create the conference program almost entirely from the proposals that were received in response to the call for proposals. The seven Plenary Panels, which make up the inaugural Research Frontiers Conference, were selected to facilitate explorations of a diverse set of themes that address many facets of the overall conference theme.
The conference design itself is an experiment. It departs from the traditional Q&A format. Collectively we are the brain trust to engage the issues raised by each plenary panel. The role of each Plenary Panel is to motivate and direct our attention to new research opportunities, and to build community by stimulating and engaging debate and unleashing vigorous exchanges among us. Hopefully, in the course of building community new research collaborations will be forged that will advance management research in the context of emerging economies.
I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the Management Department of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for sponsoring and hosting this conference, to the HKUST Business School and The Institute for Emerging Market Studies for their co-sponsorship, to the local organizing committee, particularly Daphne Cheung, for their tireless efforts in making us welcome and creating the conditions for a successful and productive conference and to City University Department of Management for sponsoring and hosting the pre-conference Paper Development Workshop.
Arie Y. Lewin.
MOR Editor in Chief
Welcome Message from the HKUST President
Good afternoon, Professor Lin [Justin Lin], Professor Lewin [Arie Lewin], guests and my fellow colleagues,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all, and at the same time, inaugurate the Management and Organization Review (MOR) Research Frontiers Conference.
The conference, today and for the years to come, is set to be an exploration platform for management and organization scholars around the world to investigate and create new knowledge in the field. To give a broader perspective, business executives, policy-makers, social science and other non-business scholars are brought together with a view to stimulating a boundary-crossing conversation.
This conference also provides the basis for framing future issues of the MOR Journal – a well-established academic journal, which was born some ten years ago, with special reference to China and other emerging economies in the broad field of business and management studies.
It is a privilege for the HKUST Business School to host this maiden conference with the joint effort from the School’s Management Department and our Institute for Emerging Market Studies.
The core theme of today’s conference revolves around “Globalization of Knowledge Creation and Innovation in the Context of Emerging Economies”. It is an interesting theme that I am sure HKUST’s unique location and strength can add a significant, extra value.
With its excellent proximity to Mainland China and other emerging Asian economies, HKUST is well-positioned to continue its vigorous research culture and nurture more creative entrepreneurs. We hope to see more innovative business ideas, similar to those from for example Alibaba and Huawei in China, develop in the region.
It is our strong belief that closer international exchange and collaboration will enable us to learn from our peers and distinguished speakers worldwide. To this end, I would like to thank Professor Justin Lin from Peking University for delivering a keynote speech for us shortly, Professor Lewin and his editorial team for choosing the HKUST Business School to be the host, and also the Dean of our Business School Professor Jitendra V Singh as well as the Head of its Management Department Professor JT Li for putting together this event.
In closing, may I wish you all a very successful conference. I hope its seven plenary sessions in the next few days can stretch your minds further in contributing to management and organization research globally and the long-term effectiveness of companies in emerging markets.
Professor Tony F. Chan
HKUST President

New Structural Economics:
The Third Wave of Development Thinking |
|
Abstract:
Development economists in post WWII emphasized structural change but attributed the lack thereof to market failures and proposed import substitution strategies. By the 1970s, the neoliberal Washington Consensus focused on government failures and advocated market liberalization. In the lecture, I will present the new structural economics as the third wave of development thinking and propose market as the basic institution for resource allocation and the state playing a facilitation role for structural change to achieve a country’s dynamic development. |
