Contemporary organizations face increasingly complex tasks and business activities that are often best addressed through integrating contributions from employees across groups, departments, and business units. Yet, cross-group or department collaboration remains a major challenge due in large part to organizational silo problems, which describe a phenomenon of the difficulty of communicating and collaborating across group boundaries within organizations. Our research aims to examine an overlooked research question – why employees experience difficulties to effectively work with colleagues in other groups – by demonstrating the unintended effect of strong intragroup identification on impeding cross group collaboration. We further ask, if such an unintended effect does occur, through what mechanisms it occurs and what organizations can do to mitigate the silo problem.
