2019 Research Methods Workshop
The research methods workshop in 2019 will be held in the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) in the week of July 14 – 18, 2019. Professor Ray Friedman will be the Program Director of the workshop and he has invited thirteen professors to serve as lecturers and group facilitators. As he will not be available on July 14-18 next year due to schedule conflict, Professor Jing Zhou will run the workshop on the ground next summer. The Call for Applications will be sent out to IACMR members in November for the interested members to enroll for the highly acclaimed workshop. Zhijun Yao (Executive Director) visited HIT campus in early September to check about the venue facility and local accommodations. The school has two buildings – the old building is on the campus located in the center of the city while the new building is in a newly developed area with good environment of trees and a river. There are quite a few MBA/EMBA classrooms, meeting rooms and an auditorium for lectures in the new building suitable for lectures and group discussions. The restaurant on the old campus will be used for the welcome dinner and graduation dinner.
She also had a meeting with Professor Qiang Ye, Dean of HIT School of Management and his colleagues. She briefed about the workshop schedule and topics as well as the past workshops and expressed her sincere thanks for the kind support of HIT School of Management to host the 2019 workshop. Dean Ye thanked IACMR for the trust in HIT. Being a participant of the 2005 workshop in Xi’an, he spoke highly of the workshop and the benefits to participants and assured his full support to the workshop. The school formed the Local Arrangements Committee.
2018 Teacher Training Workshop for the “Philosophy of Management Research” course
The 2018 Teacher Training Workshop for the PMR course will be held in Tongji University on December 13-17. This is the fourth time to run the course after those held in Peking University, Fudan University, and Nanjing University from 2015. Sixteen teachers from 14 universities including three from Hong Kong, Macau and Australia will participate in the workshop to enjoy the lectures and discussions offered by the following faculty facilitators led by Professor Anne Tsui.

This workshop involves a four and a half days’ intensive study of the philosophy of science issues in social science research, how progress occurs in science, the role of values in scientific activities, and the challenges in management research, concluding with a discussion of the idea of responsible science in business and management. Participants will discuss how to teach this course to doctoral students so that the future scholars will live up to the responsibility of pursuing ‘responsible science’– research that generate credible and useful knowledge to improve management and business practices for a better world.
2020 IACMR Conference at Xi’an
The 2020 IACMR Conference will be held on June 17-21 in Xi’an, the ancient capital of Chinese Qin, Han and Tang dynasties and famous worldwide for the Terra Cotta Worriers. With the theme of ‘Cultivating Entrepreneurship in China’, the conference will be jointly hosted by Guanghua School of Management (GSM Xi’an Campus) of Peking University and the School of Management, Xi’an Jiaotong University. Earlier this year, the two schools signed a memorandum about this and GSM will play the leading role in hosting the conference – the conference site will be in the buildings of GSM Xi’an Campus and two of its neighbouring hotels. During the Wuhan Conference in June, GSM had a team of conference related staff to observe the complete conference programs for preparations and improvement. In addition, the team visited the venues in Xi’an to better understand conference logistics. It’s believed the 2020 conference will have great administrative support with the active and dedicated team.
IACMR Research Committee (2018- 2020)
The Research Committee is to promote and facilitate scholarship among members doing Chinese management research, advance research opportunities for members, promote research ethics, and screen and select nonconference award winners. Their specific tasks include evaluating proposals for small research grants or candidates for research/paper awards, mainly the Kwok Leung Memorial Dissertation Fund Grant and IACMR/Emerald China Doctoral-Research Publication Awards at the current stage.

Responsible Research in Management Award
This award is sponsored by IACMR and the Community for Responsible Research in Business and Management (RRBM). Responsible research is defined as studies that produce both credible and useful knowledge. The purpose of responsible research is to encourage studies that contribute to basic knowledge that has implications for making the world a better place through evidence-based, high quality and societal beneficial business and management practices. The award is to recognize research that exemplifies the seven principles of RRBM. Ten articles and two books won the award last year (click here for details). This issue’s Dialogue, Debate and Discussion forum debates Tesla as a Disruptor and the likelihood of game changing new disruptors.

Remembering James March: Call for Your Ideas and Actions
Professor James March passed away on September 27, 2018. An announcement was issued very soon in the name of Anne Tsui (Founding President of IACMR and Founding Editor-in-Chief of MOR) and Arie Lewin (current Editor-in-Chief of MOR) to offer our condolence. Also two editors called for ideas and actions to celebrate and honor James March’s intellectual legacy.
Prof March’s first major work Organization(1958), with Herbert Simon, defined the field of organizations. His name is associated with most of the important ideas in our field: exploration and exploitation, organizational learning, garbage can model of organizational choice, new institutionalism, ambiguity and choice, and many more.
Prof. March wrote the inaugural article for Management and Organization Review(March, 2005) titled “Parochialism in the evolution of a research community: The case of organization studies.” His insight is on how parochialism may limit the integration of organizational studies, but if properly balanced with cross-boundary linkages and interactions, can prevent the homogenizing tendencies of dominant scholarly groups. This article is a strong and eloquent argument that contextual and indigenous Chinese management studies are necessary for developing both contextualized and universal knowledge.
MOR and IACMR are indebted to Prof March for his insightful advice. His legacy is part of the intellectual foundation of Chinese management research. MOR and IACMR is establishing a committee to consider various ideas and initiatives for celebrating and honoring James March’s intellectual legacy. We are soliciting your ideas and suggestions as well as volunteers who wish to serve on this committee. Some suggestions include an MOR Special Issue, Establishing an Award in his name, and a special memorial conference. However, we are hoping to stimulate many more ideas that relate James March’s intellectual leadership to China.
