IACMR launched the program of “The Scholarship of Teaching Workshop” in 2019 with the purpose of helping those IACMR members with a passion to education become excellent teachers, so as to help advance the quality of management education in China, as well as accomplish the IACMR mission to “advance the science, education and practice of Chinese management”.

This workshop is designed for faculty members with at least two years’ of teaching experience in the field of management (e.g., OB, HR, Strategy, Entrepreneurship, Consumer Behavior etc.).

III. Unique Features

This workshop adopts an integrated three-tier instructional model, combining Lead Instructors, Practicum Instructors, and Group Mentors to provide participants with a comprehensive and highly interactive learning experience.

1. Integrating the Science and Art of Teaching

Conventional faculty development programs in business education in China are often built primarily on instructors’ personal teaching experience, emphasizing practical insights and accumulated expertise. While valuable, such approaches tend to rely heavily on individual experience. The IACMR Teaching Workshop represents a new approach to faculty development by integrating evidence-based learning science with the practical wisdom of experienced educators. Drawing upon contemporary research on teaching and learning, the workshop systematically translates learning science into classroom practice, enabling participants to build a stronger theoretical foundation for effective teaching. In addition, the workshop provides comprehensive training in a wide range of instructional approaches—including case teaching and other learner-centered pedagogies—equipping participants with flexible teaching strategies that can be adapted to different learning environments, course objectives, and student populations.

2. Immersive, Hands-on Learning with Immediate Application

A defining feature of this workshop is its strong emphasis on learning by doing. The primary goal is to help participants refine and improve their own teaching designs through continuous practice and feedback. The three-day program consists of six half-day immersive modules, each following a “theory-to-practice” format. Every module begins with focused instruction from experienced faculty on a specific teaching approach or instructional skill, followed by dedicated hands-on workshop sessions during which participants immediately apply what they have learned to improve their own teaching materials and course designs. Throughout these practical sessions, instructors provide individualized guidance, answer questions, and help participants address challenges encountered while implementing new teaching strategies.

The workshop concludes with a teaching design showcase and peer-review session. Participants first receive feedback within their small groups, revise their teaching plans accordingly, and then selected representatives present their work to the entire workshop. Faculty mentors and fellow participants jointly provide constructive feedback, evaluation, and discussion, enabling participants to further strengthen both their teaching content and instructional design.

3. Comprehensive Pre-work to Maximize Learning Effectiveness

Unlike many conventional teaching workshops that require little preparation before attendance, the IACMR workshop emphasizes a complete learning cycle that begins well before the program starts. Applicants are required to submit a personal statement together with a teaching plan that they wish to improve (see Section IV and the application form for details). After admission, participants are expected to complete all assigned pre-workshop readings prior to arrival. This preparation establishes a common foundation of knowledge and enables participants to engage fully in the interactive discussions, practical exercises, and collaborative learning activities throughout the workshop.

4. Continuous Mentorship and Personalized Development

The workshop adopts a three-tier instructional structure consisting of Lead Instructors, Practicum Instructors, and Group Mentors, with the Group Mentors accompanying participants throughout the entire three-day program. Working closely with small groups, mentors facilitate in-depth discussions and provide personalized coaching to help participants understand, evaluate, and effectively apply a variety of teaching approaches. Through continuous mentoring, participants are guided along a coherent developmental pathway—from understanding educational theories, to implementing them in practice, and ultimately refining and enhancing their teaching.

Supported by structured pre-workshop preparation, collaborative in-class learning, and sustained faculty mentorship, the workshop enables participants to broaden their instructional perspectives, master diverse teaching methods, address common teaching challenges, and develop a personalized pathway for continuous improvement in business education.

IV. Application Requirements, Procedure, and Fee

Due to the highly interactive and practice-oriented nature of the workshop, participation will be limited to approximately 50 participants. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Be a current paid member of IACMR (click here to become an IACMR member).
2. Have at least two years of teaching experience in a management-related field, such as organizational behavior, human resource management, strategy, innovation, consumer behavior, or related disciplines.
3. To ensure that all participants are well prepared for the workshop, IACMR members applying for the workshop are required to submit an application statement and a teaching plan. The application materials can be downloaded here:

The application statement should include the following information:

(1) their most proud achievement and the toughest challenges in teaching
(2) what they want to improve the most during the workshop, and
(3) how they see teaching in their careers.

The “teaching plan” should answer the following five questions:

(1) What the session (or a case) is about
(2) how this session (or the case) fits in a course
(3) why it is taught (learning objectives)
(4) what you are going to teach (the contents), and
(5) how you are going to teach it (the process).  

For those who are not familiar with teaching plan, please refer to HBS teaching note #9-793-105, “Teaching Notes: Communicating the Teacher’s Wisdom”, by James Austin. The notes are available to faculty members in HBSP.Harvard.EDU. It is written for case teaching, but the principles apply to other teaching methods (lecture, storytelling, experiment, simulation, field visit etc.) as well.

Based on the submitted teaching plan, workshop faculty will divide participants into groups with similar interests to ensure more effective group discussion. The program organization committee will seek applicants who have the passion and drive for teaching excellence, as is reflected in the application essay and the submitted teaching plan.

The deadline for application to participate in the program is September 30, 2026.  Applications should be sent to IACMR Office (iacmrmembership@pku.edu.cn)，please use “2026 IACMR Teaching Workshop Application + Your Full Name” as the subject line of your email. Acceptance notice will be sent by October 15, 2026.

Program fee:

The registration fee for the workshop is RMB 2,000, covering instructional fees, workshop materials, coffee breaks, and most meals during the three-day workshop. Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation expenses. Registration fees should be paid after admission notifications are issued on October 15, 2026. The payment deadline is October 30, 2026.
